The partner takes charge of staffing, curriculum, scheduling, assessments, and school-level choices. Meanwhile, the district ensures the partner's adherence to academic and financial standards.

Engaging in an 1882 partnership can result in extra state funding for the partnered school. Furthermore, schools facing unfavorable state accountability ratings can access a two-year exemption from certain accountability interventions upon approval of their 1882 partnership.
